Minorities, or oppressed communities and nations, are often said to benefit from one simple word – truth. Violators, in most instances, wish to hide truth, while research reveals the truth and helps the side of the marginalised. In this light, transformative and activist research works: it helps people to transform oppressive systems.

Truth should therefore be the focus of media’s human rights-based approach to conflicts, and its monitoring and accountability role. Examples of such research could be:

• Designing an embedded media strategy within the R2P (Responsibility to Protect) framework to facilitate its implementation in an appropriate manner.
• Developing a methodological framework to assess the state of the ‘global discursive order’ of conflicts, as part of an early warning mechanism. This could facilitate appropriate interventions to mitigate conflicts in pre- and post- conflict environments.
• Assessing local and international media coverage of conflicts in a scientific manner, and understanding conditions of conflicts and reporting.
