Interventions

The Centre intends to be the prominent ‘knowledge force’ in transforming the media’s role in conflicts. We believe that the media should proactively contribute to promotion and protection of human rights, which is indispensable for building peace. Since discourse is the vehicle of power and knowledge processing, a qualitative change is necessary in the role of journalism in violent conflicts.

On one hand, this can serve to address the power imbalance between parties and communities where violence is present. On the other, it can empower the international community to step in: ensuring accountability and preventing further deterioration of human rights situations. Here, the concepts of Human Rights Journalism (HRJ), Peace Journalism (PJ) and Communicating with Communities (CwC) can facilitate media intervention programmes.
