Call for Workshop Participants: Journalism of Tolerance: How to Avoid Xenophobia in the Media

The Sakarya University of Turkey and the Centre for Media, Human Rights, and Peacebuilding (CMHRP) in the UK, with the support of the U.S. Mission to Turkey Grants Programme are organising workshops for journalists on “Journalism of Tolerance: How to Avoid Xenophobia in the Media” from 17- 26 May 2022.

This workshop will focus on the following six areas. 1. Xenophobia and its effects 2. Comparative perspectives of xenophobia around the world 3. Xenophobia in the Turkish media 4. How to avoid xenophobia in the media? 5. Reporting about immigrants and refugees 6. Introduction to Human Rights Journalism and Peace Journalism.

Registration is free for all participants. Certificate will be provided to all participants after the workshop. Since a workshop will be held for two consecutive days, Sakarya University will arrange accommodation for journalists to stay overnight (1 night) in Sakarya. Two nights of accommodation will be provided for those who attend from a far distance. Travel expenses for the journalists attending this workshop will be borne by Sakayra University. Breakfast on the second day and lunch during the workshop will be provided to the participants.

A workshop will be held for two days. Only 25 Journalists will be allowed in a workshop. A total of 100 journalists will be allowed in the 4 workshops organised. Therefore, please send us your applications as soon as possible.

Journalists who have reported on immigrants, refugees and other minority/ marginalised groups will be given priority to attend the workshop.

You must send two proofs of your reporting about immigrants, refugees and other minority / marginalised groups, or a letter from your editor/news editor confirming your eligibility.

Journalists attending these workshops have the advantage of taking part in our ongoing research entitled ‘Functional Relationship between Xenophobia, Media’s Threat Image Construction and Relative Deprivation’ and preparation of the ‘Guide manual about reporting immigrants and refugees in Turkey: How to avoid xenophobia in the media’ in Turkey, before, during and after the workshops. Those who wish to take part in this research (interview and survey) will be given priority to participate in the workshop. Please indicate your desire to participate in this research in the application form enclosed below. You don’t necessarily have to use your name in this research- you can also participate anonymously.
